Formation States: D&D3E War Law units must be in one of the following formation states: General Order or Battle Order. Two special states exist; Column is a varian of the Battle Order, while Routed is a special state that applies to retreating, disordered or routed formations.

  • General Order: basically an open horde of combatants. Units in Open Horde formation are in General Order. A unit in General order occupies one hex.
  • Battle Order: applies to all units in an ordered formation. Units in Chequered, Legion Battle, Line, Phalanx, Spear, Square or Wedge formation are in Battle Order. A unit in Battle Order occupies one hex.
  • Column: a unit in Column formation is considered to be in Column state. A unit in Column state occupies one hex.
  • Routed: a unit that is either retreating, disordered or routed is considered in Routed state. A unit in Routed state occupies two hexes. For further information see WL 3.2.1.

Morale States: A unit can be in four morale states: Prepared, Normal, Disordered and Routed. See the Modifiers Table for the effects of Morale states. Also see WL 3.2.2.

Casualty States: The casualty state of a unit determines the unit's combat efficiency. See the Modifiers Table for the effects of casualties on combat efficiency.

Parry States: A unit can fight defensively, thereby lowering its Attack by -4, but increasing its AC by +2.

Zones of Control (ZoC): Each unit exerts a zone of control into its Front hexes. Any unit moving into the ZoC of enemy unit must immediately stop its movement or suffer Attacks of Opportunities. Any unit fleeing (turning by 120° to 180° and moving away from the enemy unit) from an enemy ZoC suffers Attacks of Opportunities. Any unit moving through the ZoC of an enemy unit suffers Attacks of Opportunities by that unit. A unit can make one Attack of Opportunity per round, but the player controlling the unit can choose whether to make an AoO or not.
